Cookie-cutter pond kits sold at big-box stores are engineered for sea-level climates with mild winters. At Crystal Bay's 6,200-foot elevation, those systems fail predictably: pump seals crack, liner folds tear at freeze-thaw stress points, and undersized basins freeze solid, killing fish and damaging equipment. Custom pond installation by Lakescaping LLC begins with an engineering assessment that accounts for your specific site, your intended use (ornamental, koi, wildlife habitat), and the mechanical stresses your pond will face over decades of Sierra Nevada winters.
Over 33 years of pond construction in Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Glenbrook, and Zephyr Cove, we have developed standardized construction methods for high-altitude pond systems that consistently outperform off-the-shelf alternatives. This page describes our process, materials, and maintenance requirements so you can make an informed decision before your consultation.
Rectangular, circular, or L-shaped ponds with mortared stone or concrete block walls, coping stone, and formal planting schemes. Common in HOA communities with specific design guidelines. We work with all Incline Village and Crystal Bay HOA design review boards and can prepare the required documentation for approval.
Boulder-edged, irregular-shape ponds designed to mimic mountain lake aesthetics while meeting koi care requirements: minimum 4-foot depth, biological filtration, aeration, and predator protection. We specify Rainbird and Toro pump systems for consistent flow and easy seasonal maintenance access.
Shallow-margin ponds designed to support native Nevada amphibians, insects, and birds. These ponds use native plant species, gravel substrate, and minimal mechanical filtration. TRPA land coverage calculations are critical for these installations since they often involve significant area.
For clients who want the visual and acoustic effect of moving water without open-water maintenance, pondless systems use a buried basin and vault to recirculate water. These are fully winterizable and eliminate drowning hazards for properties with children or pets.
Every custom pond we design is sized and specified to meet the following minimum standards:
We use 45-mil EPDM liner exclusively for pond basins. Thinner liners (20- or 30-mil) are false economy at altitude—UV degradation, freeze stress, and puncture risk make liner failure the most expensive repair a pond owner faces. RPE underlayment under the EPDM prevents puncture from angular gravel and root intrusion.
Boulder edges use locally sourced Sierra Nevada granite selected for freeze-thaw stability. Coping stone is typically Belgard or Basalite bluestone or granite, set in Type S mortar with silicone expansion joints at 8-foot intervals to accommodate thermal movement.
We specify Toro and Rainbird pump systems for their proven reliability in cold-climate applications and the availability of service parts in northern Nevada. Pump vaults are installed with union fittings and shutoff valves on all lines for easy seasonal removal and reinstallation.
FX Luminaire underwater LED fixtures provide long-life, low-voltage illumination with minimal heat output. Submersible fixtures are rated IP68 (fully waterproof) and selected for color temperature (typically 2700K–3000K warm white) that complements the natural stone environment.
Custom pond installation at Crystal Bay typically follows this sequence:
Proper seasonal maintenance is essential for pond longevity at Lake Tahoe elevations.
Spring startup (May): Drain partial, clean pond bottom, inspect liner for winter damage, clean or replace filter media, reinstall pump, refill and treat water, introduce plants.
Summer maintenance: Weekly water level checks (evaporation at altitude is substantial), monthly filter cleaning, quarterly water testing, debris removal.
Fall preparation (September–October): Reduce feeding as water cools, install aeration system for winter, apply cold-water bacteria treatment, net cover to prevent leaf debris.
Winter shutdown (November): Remove pump and store indoors, blow out plumbing lines, lower water level, ensure aeration is operating to prevent complete ice-over.
At Crystal Bay's elevation, koi ponds should be a minimum of 4 feet deep to prevent complete freeze-through during winter. Koi enter a torpor state at temperatures below 50°F and need liquid water to survive. We also recommend a dedicated aeration system to maintain dissolved oxygen under winter ice cover.
Most residential ponds under 500 square feet of surface area and with TRPA-compliant overflow management do not require a separate TRPA permit. However, any project involving land disturbance over 500 square feet or changes to impervious surface coverage will require TRPA review. Lakescaping LLC handles all permit research and application preparation as part of our project scope.
We specify 45-mil EPDM liner with RPE underlayment for all pond installations. EPDM has excellent resistance to UV degradation, ozone, and the extreme temperature swings experienced at 6,200-foot elevation. Thinner PVC liners are not suitable for high-altitude installations and typically fail within 5–7 years.
Yes, with proper pond depth (4+ feet), aeration, and water quality management. Koi are cold-hardy fish that can survive Lake Tahoe winters if they have sufficient water depth and oxygenation. We design all koi ponds with winter survival as a primary requirement and provide a complete winterization protocol at project handoff.
A standard residential koi pond (500–1,500 gallons) typically takes 4–7 days for installation, including excavation, liner work, stone placement, and mechanical installation. Larger or more complex installations may require 10–14 days. We provide a detailed project schedule at the time of proposal.
